Kelek has trained dire wolves as mounts and uses them to help in capturing unicorns. Venger transforms them into puppies and they are taken to the Lost Valley of the Unicorns to remain as guard dogs and safeguard the unicorn herd at the bequest of Dungeon Master.
In a 1986 Dungeons & Dragons annual story called Gruesome Goblins trained dire wolves are used as mounts by a clan of sylvan goblins.
